In theory any deviation from an assigned altitude qualifies as a violation, but in practice violations begin at 300 feet above or below an assigned altitude.NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) forms work for an altitude bust with some interesting exceptions.A pilot may not have to serve a suspension if ATC did not inform the pilot of the deviation based on Brasher doctrine.
